Every year on March 25, the anniversary of the Downfall of Sauron, the Tolkien Society hosts Tolkien Reading Day. This year’s theme selected by the Tolkien Society is Travel and Adventure. The primary goal is to promote the reading of the works of J.R R. Tolkien! To celebrate, Pages Unbound will be hosting two weeks of Tolkien-related posts. In addition to our own thoughts, we will be featuring some guest posts!

Follow the questions to see if YOU can back a Silmaril from Morgoth! And let us know if you succeed in the comments!
My thinking is both that Morgoth is scary and they are cursed! I’m staying far away!

I cannot. I steered away because of the ol’ curse thing my first run through too, and was happy in my isolated kingdom until I realized I’m a “people person” and maybe an isolated kingdom could be *too* isolated. So I gave it another go. This time I either straight-up died for lack of singing ability OR I returned its beauty to Middle-earth. But here’s the thing…how do I characterize “good” at singing?? I do it all the time. I love karaoke. And I’m decent. But I’m not *that good* so whoever put their name in to karaoke after me feels anxious about it, you know? I’m like the “Hey, he’s having fun so I can to!” karaoke guy. So I’m not really sure how to rate this.
Update: I just asked Ashley (as we’re in our prep mod now and while she’s grading I’m seeing if I can reclaim a Silmaril from Morgoth (so we’re both doing very important things)) if I had a good singing voice and she gave an immediate, “Yeah!” So I guess I reclaimed it after all. Huzzah!

You know, that is an excellent question about how good at singing you have to be. There is definitely magic done through singing in The Silmarillion, and I kind of assumed the people who were better at it were better singers, but maybe you do only have to be kind of decent! Maybe it is the spirit that counts and not the notes!

Just when I thought the chart couldn’t get better. Congratulations on surviving your quest, O Karaoke Friend.

Thank you! And after much thought, I think I’d use George Michael’s “Faith,” Alanis Morissette’s “You Oughta Know,” or the Rolling Stones’ “Beast of Burden” to complete my quest.

Apparently, I will obtain a single Silmaril, but only by the grace of not being greedy and being able to carry a tune LOL
