Promi lives by his wits, stealing what he needs and occasionally testing his skills against the security of the complacent upper class. An attempt to steal a pie from under the nose of the Divine Monk himself, however, lands Promi in jail where he learns a startling prophecy—the end of magic and of his world rapidly approaches. Atlanta, a girl with natural magic, does not know anything about prophecies, but she does fear the evil that creeps through the Great Forest. She thinks Promi can help, but the thief wants nothing more than to return to the only life he knows.

The Emperor’s Soul by Brandon Sanderson
Shai is a Forger–one of the best. But the arbiters who rule the empire believer her art is nothing more than a trick, or, at the worst, a heresy. But now, as the result of an assassination attempt, the emperor sleeps in a coma and when he wakes, an enemy faction will no doubt declare him unfit to rule. So the arbiters need Shai. They need her to do the impossible. They need her to refashion a soul for the emperor.
Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson

Kelsier, a skaa thief escaped from a life of labor, dares to challenge the might of the Lord Ruler. He, after all, as a result of his mixed heritage, possesses all the skills of a Mistborn. But, if his plan is to succeed, he will also need the help of an unlikely ally–a young street urchin who does not yet know the power she wields.
