Every year on March 25, the anniversary of the Downfall of Sauron, the Tolkien Society hosts Tolkien Reading Day. This year’s theme is Life, Death, and Immortality. The primary goal is to promote the reading of the works of J.R R. Tolkien! To celebrate, Pages Unbound will be hosting two weeks of Tolkien-related posts. In addition to our own thoughts, we will be featuring guest posts, interviews, and giveaways!

Hi everyone!

I’m Arvenig and I’m the blogger from http://www.arvenig.it/blog/.

Today in this guest post I’m going to contribute to the Tolkien Reading
Event (here on Pages Unbound) by writing the top twenty quotes from
Tolkien. So let’s start!

  • All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is
    given to us
    -The Fellowship of the Ring
  • The world is indeed full of peril, and in it there are many
dark places; but still there is much that is fair, and though in all
lands love is now mingled with grief, it grows perhaps the greater
    -The Fellowship of the Ring
  • Home is behind, the world ahead, And there are many paths to
tread, Through shadows to the edge of night, Until the stars are all
alight. Then world behind and home ahead, We’ll wander back and home to
bed. Mist and twilight, cloud and shade, Away shall fade! Away shall
    fade!
    -The Fellowship of the Ring
  • It’s a dangerous business, Frodo, going out your door. You
step onto the road, and if you don’t keep your feet, there’s no knowing
where you might be swept off to.
    -The Lord of the Rings
  • A man that flies from his fear may find that he has only
taken a short cut to meet.
    -The Children of Húrin
  • Still round the corner there may wait A new road or a secret
gate And though I oft have passed them by A day will come at last when I
Shall take the hidden paths that run West of the Moon, East of the
    Sun.
    -The Lord of the Rings
  • May the wind under your wings bear you where the sun sails
    and the moon walks.
    -The Hobbit
  • I will not walk backward in life. -The Children of Húrin
  • Even the smallest person can change the course of the
    future.
    -The Fellowship of the Ring
  • Courage is found in unlikely places. -The Lord of
    the Rings
  • You are only quite a little fellow in a wide world after
    all!
    -The Hobbit
  • There is nothing like looking, if you want to find
something. You certainly usually find something, if you look, but it is
not always quite the something you were after.
    -The Hobbit
  • All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is
    given us.
    -The Fellowship of the Ring
  • Deeds will not be less valiant because they are
    unpraised.
    -The Return of the King
  • Small wonder that spell means both a story told, and a
formula of power over living men.
    -On Fairy Stories
  • The story-maker proves a successful ‘sub-creator’. He makes
a Secondary World which your mind can enter. Inside it, what he relates
is ‘true’: it accords with the laws of that world. You therefore believe
it, while you are, as it were, inside. The moment disbelief arises, the
spell is broken; the magic, or rather art, has failed.
    -On Fairy Stories
  • Fantasy remains a human right: we make in our measure and in
our derivative mode, because we are made: and not only made, but made in
the image and likeness of a Maker.
The Monsters and the Critics and other
    essays
  • Their ‘magic’ is Art, delivered from many of its human
    limitations.
    -The Silmarillion
  • A story must be told or there’ll be no story, yet it is the
untold stories that are most moving. Don’t adventures ever have an end?
I suppose not. Someone else always has to carry on on the
    story.
    -The Lord of the Rings
  • All that is gold does not glitter, Not all those who wander
are lost; The old that is strong does not wither, Deep roots are not
    reached by the frost.
    -The Fellowship of the Ring

Wonderful collection of quotes! My favourite is also “All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us” but there are so many other fantastic quotes and descriptions and paragraphs in all of his novels 🙂 But oh! Another favourite quote of mine is “I will not say do not weep; for not all tears are an evil” 🙂

I haven’ heard of a few of these quotes like the ones from “On Fairy Stories”. I think they’re more Tolkien yet for me to pick up…. which is an awesome thought. 🙂

“Many that live deserve death, some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them?” But of course, that’s only one of many.
