Find Your Commonplace: A Renaissance-Inspired Reading Event

Find Your Commonplace 1

The Event

In this event, bloggers will create a virtual commonplace book.  You’ll spend roughly one month documenting your reading: collecting quotes, pictures, screenshots, or other tidbits that fascinate you.  At the end of the event, you’ll create a post to share what you collected with others.  It’s as simple as that!

What’s a Commonplace Book?

Commonplace books were used by early modern (Renaissance) readers to collect parts of books that were interesting to them.  Some readers carefully copied down quotes or observations into a journal; others simply cut the passages they liked straight out of the book and pasted them into the commonplace book.  Sometimes readers even stitched passages from several books together in order to form a new text!

But what exactly should you do to participate?

Really, whatever you want!  You can create a post where you simply share notable quotes you encountered during the month.  If you like graphics, you can create a virtual scrapbook or journal page.  Use your imagination!

You can also collect whatever you want!  You can collect inspirational quotes or beautiful passages.  You can collect everything related to a single topic that interests you (reading, love, diversity).  You can collect a hodge podge of things that just happened to catch your attention.  There’s no wrong way to do this!

Finally, you should feel free to gather passages from anything that you read, not just novels.  Magazines, Twitter, the posters on the subway, and other blogs are all fair game!

The Nitty Gritty Details

Sign Ups

You can sign up beginning today, October 18 by using the Mr. Linky at the bottom of this post and continue to sign up any time before the end of the event.  Just leave yourself enough time to collect your passages!

The Due Date

You should post your completed collection on your own blog on Friday, November 20.  We’d love for you to include your passages, a brief explanation of what you decided to collect, and a link back to Pages Unbound. We’ll have another Mr. Linky here for you to submit your post, so everyone can blog hop to the different commonplace posts!

If you think this sounds like a fun event, please spread the word on social media or your blog!

I hope you can join us! We were trying to come up with an event that was fairly low time commitment. For me, I think the key is going to be remembering to mark down interesting quotes as I read!

I would love to participate as the idea sounds very intriguing, but unfortunately I’m going on holiday soon so I already have my hands full of trying to fill up the blog with stuff during my hiatus. Good luck with it!

That’s alright! It’s not a huge time commitment! If you’re feeling busy, though, we’d love if you could at least help spread the word. 🙂
